

Viola Barrington
Viola Barrington was
born June 24, 1912, in Paden, Oklahoma to James Ambrose and Matie (Woods) Barrington. She departed this life Friday, February 4, 2005, in
Silver Spring, Maryland, at the age of 92 years, 7 months, and 11 days. She was formerly of Peggs, Oklahoma.
Traveling by covered
wagon, the Barringtons settled near Paden, Oklahoma.
The entire family worked in the cotton fields, including all 11 children. Having also lived in the Westville and Locust Grove
areas, the family ultimately settled on a farm in Cherokee County south of Peggs. Viola attended schools in Okfuskee, Adair, Mayes,
and Cherokee counties.
After the death of her
parents, Viola, and her daughter, moved to Tahlequah.
Viola worked for the Klos Manufacturing Company making World War II military
uniforms. She made the move to Muskogee, with
the company, until it closed. She then worked
for the Swift meat packing plant until 1953. She
then moved to Washington, D.C., to live with her daughter.
She spent the past several years living in the D.C. and Silver Spring areas. There, she worked as a caregiver for the elderly
and enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Viola was an avid
quilter. She had been a member of the Colesville
United Methodist Church in Silver Spring for several years and also a past member of the First
Baptist Church in Muskogee.
Viola is survived
by: 1 daughter: Geneva B. Barnes of Silver
Spring, Maryland; 3 grandchildren: John Barnes
and wife Sandra of Olney, Maryland, Susan Slagle and husband Jim of Greensboro, North
Carolina, and Paul Barnes of St. Augustine, Florida; 3 great grandchildren: Sean Barnes of Olney, Maryland, Daylon Slagle of
Greensboro, North Carolina, and Amanda Deshautelle and husband Jamie of Germantown,
Maryland; 1 brother: William H. Barrington and
wife Alpha (Keeton) of Peggs, Oklahoma; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and a
host of friends.
Viola was preceded in
death by: her parents; four sisters: Pearl Rousey, Cleo Hudson, Irene Barrington, and
Delma Conrad; and five brothers: Roy Barrington, Carl
Barrington, Robert Barrington, Elbert Barrington, and James Arlis Barrington.
Services were entrusted
to the Locust Grove Funeral Home. Friends were
received at the funeral home, 120 North Wyandotte in Locust Grove, on Thursday, February
10, 2005, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Services
were held at 2:00 PM, Friday, February 11, 2005, at the New Home Cemetery Chapel, near Peggs,
Oklahoma.
