Sally Geneva Gibson

Sally Geneva Gibson was born September 1, 1911, in Blanco, Oklahoma, to George and Sally (Holloway) Beams.  She was one of 9 children.  She departed this life on Saturday, June 18, 2005, in Tarpon Springs, Florida, at the age of 93 years, 9 months, and 17 days.

Sally graduated from high school in McAlester, Oklahoma.  There, she was an outstanding athlete that participated in the high jump and running events while a member of the track team.  As well, she played on the basketball team.

Sally Geneva Beams was united in marriage to Earl S. Gibson on April 8, 1934.   Mr. Gibson, original founder of the Bank of Locust Grove, preceded his wife in death in 1981.

Sally, along with 2 of her sisters, owned and operated the Salon of Three Sisters in Muskogee, Oklahoma during World War II.  She also held the regional manager position for Studio Girl Cosmetics.     Above all, she was a devoted homemaker.

Sally was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Locust Grove.  She enjoyed and loved her church dearly.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, being a charter member of Chapter #382 in Locust Grove.  She was also a member of the Pryor Garden Club, where she served as President for some time.    As well, she was a Pryor Elks Club Elkette.  Sally enjoyed volunteering for the Meals-on-Wheels program where she would travel great distances to deliver numerous meals.  She always looked after and cared for friends that were homebound or in the rest home.

Sally was an active person who enjoyed bowling, ceramics, cooking, and dancing.   She also liked to spend time gardening.   The nickname “Gog” was given to her by her first grandson, Johnny, and was quickly adopted by her friends and family.  The significance was that it was short for “Giver Of Goodness”.  Currently, she was a resident of Tarpon Springs, Florida, where she had lived since January, 2003.  Sally will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

She is survived by: 2 sons: Samuel Gibson of Pryor, Oklahoma and Thomas Gibson of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 2 daughters: Virginia McFarlin and husband John of Palm Harbor, Florida and Nancy Steddum and husband Riddle of Houston, Texas; 1 sister:  Mary Aufderheide of San Angelo, Texas; 4 grandchildren:  John McFarlin II, Jennifer Hutchinson, Christopher Steddum, and Heather Gibson; 1 great grandson expected in September; numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Sally was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; 3 brothers; and 4 sisters.

Funeral services were held 10:30 A.M., Friday, June 24, 2005, at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Locust Grove, Oklahoma.  Reverend Bob Smith officiated with interment following at Hogan Cemetery in Locust Grove.   Services were entrusted to the Locust Grove Funeral Home.
